Acupuncture is the insertion of fine filiform needles into specific points of the body to encourage and promote healing. Based on ancient techniques and theory steeped in Daoist thought, the aim is to encourage the correct flow of a vital energy known as "Qi".

The acupuncturist will assess the current flow and strength of an individuals Qi before selecting points they feel would be the most beneficial. The needles are inserted, and manipulated until the "Deqi" sensation is felt, and then retained for a length of time. Usually this is between ten and thirty minutes.

The "Deqi" Sensation
An acupuncture session should not hurt. However the treatment requires the elicitation of deqi when inserting the needles. Some people experience this as sensations such as heat, cold, tingling, or even an electric sensation. However this sensation can also be experienced as a dull ache, not unlike a bruise. Any concerns you have about the treatment can be discussed with your practitioner during the consultation before any needles are inserted until you are happy to go ahead.

What can it be used for?
Although unable to "cure" Acupuncture has been subjected to scientific study and proven to benefit  a wide range of symptoms and disorders and is becoming increasingly popular throughout the western world as a viable treatment option.

The NICE Guidelines accept acupuncture as a viable option for several disorders including lower back pain, however traditionally acupuncture was a entire health system in it's own right and can assist with the management of a wide variety of symptoms. If you are unsure please contact us and we will be happy to discuss how we can help you with no obligation.

Moxibustion and Cupping
Those who have heard of acupuncture may have heard of moxibustion or cupping also. Classically regarded as adjunct treatments these modalities may be utilised either instead of or alongside an acupuncture treatment dependent on the outcome of the consultation.

Moxibustion involves the burning of Moxa, the herb Mugwort either over points of the body or around inserted needles to warm areas and expel "Pathogenic Cold". Your practitioner has been fully trained to ensure that this is carried out in a safe environment to ensure you need not worry about getting singed!

Cupping is a technique whereby cups are applied to areas of the body and suction is applied, normally this is through the use of modern vacuum cups as opposed to traditional fire cups. Popularised by several celebrities cupping can leave distinctive markings after application which will subside after several days.
